Marcello Mele

Marcello Mele is Full Professor of Animal Science at the Department of Agriculture, Food and Environment, University of Pisa, Italy.

Currently, he is director of the Department of Agriculture, Food and Environment, University of Pisa and member of the Academic Senate of University of Pisa. From 2016 to 2020 he was director of the Agri-environmental Research Centre “Enrico Avanzi”of University of Pisa. He is editor in chief of the “Italian Journal of Animal Science” and ordinary academic member of the “Accademia dei Georgofili”. He was nominated by the European Commission as expert member of the EIP-AGRI Focus Group “Reducing Emission from Cattle Farming”. He was also nominated by the Italian Ministry of Health as expert member of the technical committee for animal nutrition and health.

His main fields of expertise are study and developing of resilient and sustainable livestock farming systems; mitigation strategies of greenhouse gas emission from livestock production systems;     use of agricultural by-products in animal feeding and nutrition; use of plant secondary compounds in ruminant nutrition and metabolism; study of rumen metabolism and rumen microbiota; livestock farming and animal welfare; quality of animal derived food, with a focus on feeding and animal factors affecting meat and milk quality.

He coordinated several research projects, and he currently participates as task or WP leader to three EU H2020 projects dealing with sustainable livestock farming systems.
